Chapters 13-16 Charlotte weaves the word TERRIFIC into her web and then the word RADIANT. Dr Dorian reassures Mrs Arable that Fern is fine and her behaviour normal—even admirable. Charlotte explains she's about to lay eggs and make an egg sac—activities that will need her full attention. Wilbur wonders why she can't lay her eggs at the fair, but Charlotte tells him she needs to arrange her schedule around the eggs, not vice versa. But she promises she'll go with Wilbur if she possibly can. Wilbur is taken to be shown at the fair; Charlotte and Templeton accompany him. STEM Challenge Response Today we decided to take the opportunity to try a woollen web making challenge as a team. We were lucky enough to work in Te Ao Marama as the DSS Rugby/Netball fun day was taking place. The challenge was to plan how we were going to attach the wool to the plate, some made slits with scissors and others used a whole punch to weave the wool through. As Charlotte does for Wilbur we too attached positive words to our webs and then completed with some great looking spiders Literacy & Art Responses Zentangle 'Salutations' Art The Zentangle Method is relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. Salutations is a word that Charlotte uses to greet Wilbur when they first meet in the barn. Salutations is a gesture or a spoken word made as a greeting or acknowledgement of another's arrival or departure. We have investigated how different countries offer salutations and combined the language with Zentangle art. Students in Room 6 have continued enjoying constructing a pig farm for Wilbur. In some cases their imagination has gone wild and they have included many different tools that will help make life easier. Check these video's out. Chapters 9-12 Charlotte promises Wilbur she'll save him, but she doesn't yet know-how. Trying to catch Charlotte, Avery trips and falls, crushing the rotten egg and thus saving Charlotte. Charlotte's overnight handiwork—the words SOME PIG—appears in her web. Wilbur becomes famous as strangers, thinking a miracle has occurred, start visiting the barn. One evening Charlotte calls a barn-wide meeting. She tells the group the web needs a fresh new word and asks for ideas. The goose suggests the word terrific, and Charlotte likes it. When Wilbur objects, saying he is not terrific, Charlotte tells him "that doesn't make a particle of difference" and explains that "people believe almost anything they see in print." The oldest sheep points out that old magazines at the dump might contain useful words. Wonderings... Across the Kauri Team the question was posed... 'Charlotte and Wilbur are not the same creatures yet they became friends. Does it matter that we are not the same as our friends? ' Wilbur and Charlotte became friends. You don't have to be the same as your friend, you don't have to like the same things. You have to be respectful, polite, kind, caring. friendly and loving and most important you just have to be YOU! What a wonderful collective answer that was constructed together! Artistic Responses Bottle and paper machē pigs are under way! Planning... Farmyard PuppetsChapters 5-8 Charlotte and Wilbur meet, and Wilbur is horrified to watch Charlotte catch a fly. Early summer after seven goslings are born, Templeton, the greedy rat, stores a "dud" egg in his tunnel. The oldest sheep tells Wilbur he's going to be killed for meat at Christmastime. On Sunday morning at breakfast, Fern tells her parents the goose's eggs have hatched—all but the "dud" egg Templeton rolled away for himself. In recounting these events, Fern quotes "dialogue" from the barnyard. Literacy Responses Kenning Poems - Chatterpix The word kenning comes from Old Norse (the language of the Vikings) and Anglo-Saxon (Old English, the language that present-day English comes from). It is a way of talking about something without mentioning its name. For example, when talking about the sun we could call it “heat giver”, “light maker” or “skin burner”.
Wonderings about Spiders... We improved our wonderings by improving the quality of our question. We are trying to use a variety of question starters.
Spider Wonderings... Creating a pig pen and a farm yard big enough for Wilbur. Construction challenges for friends to make together but don't forget that it has to be big enough that Wilbur cannot get out. Over the next 6-7 weeks the Kauri Team are reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. We are investigating into friendships and kindness. This week we have read chapters 1-4 and have created some wonderful pieces responding to this classic novel. Fern Arable finds her father preparing to kill the runt in a new litter of pigs. Fern persuades her father to let the piglet live and promises to raise it. Fern sells Wilbur to her uncle, on whose nearby farm she often visits her "pet." Goaded by the goose, Wilbur escapes from his pen but is found and returned. From the dark barn Charlotte tells the lonely Wilbur she'll be his friend. How are you a good friend? We are a good friend when we show kindness. We care about others feelings and we let people into our games. When there are rules to the games we try to follow them. We care by helping others and sharing when we can. Enjoying peoples company makes us happy and them happy. When you are at someone else's house treat their toys like you would treat yours, respectfully! Give someone a smile and say hello, even if you don't know them. Treat others how you want to be treated! Visual Art Responses Writing Responses As we listened to the Story we wrote some wonderings..
Kyle and Dylan created pig farm out of lego. It's very detailed with a roof tile that you can lift off and see what's inside the farm building. A tractor sits at the side of the farm and some where you can see Mr Arable and I wonder if Wilbur and Templeton are there too. Come into Room 6 if you would like to have a close up view. Keiyan spent ages making Wilbur's little pig house with many many things a pig needs to survive! If you look closely you will see Wilbur's nose and a tooth! Morena, Today's challenge is all about Animal Scenes. The human race is fascinated by animals. Whether we are seeing real animals on our daily walks or on TV, reading about them, or doing projects related to animals, we love learning about animals and activities that involve animals. Today we’re inviting you to share your creativity of an animal scene! Watch the video and have a read of the task below to form some ideas and get creating. We can't wait to see your learning! Morena, Today's challenge, challenge number 13 is to make bridge. There are so many different ways to build a bridge and you can use whatever you have around your home! Through a little investigation of the types of bridge structures we hope this science activity will get you thinking about the reasons why different structures are build the way they are. You could measure how long it is, see how much weight it can hold or even learn some facts about the different bridges we have in New Zealand. We can't wait to see what you create.
Morena,
I hope that you had a great day yesterday. Today's learning has an open ended math question. With this question you get to come up with different combinations of Zinks and Zonks. For example one combination might be 1 Zink with 7 legs and 12 Zonks with 4 legs (4x12=48 and 1x7=7 and 48+7=55). What other combinations can you come up with? Morena, There are two challenges today! The first is all about getting creative with natures. Can you find some objects outside to make a creative pattern, or even use vegetables to make an animals. Mrs Hutchings has some great examples in her video below. We can't wait to see what you create today! |
